Fushi no Kami - Volume 1, Chapter 5

After farming ends, I run to where Priest Folke is while my father is swearing on my back.  "Priest Folke! I have a thought about what we talked about before!" It seems that Priest Folke is taken aback by me who rushed to his room all the sudden. Perhaps it’s because I look too excited even though I’m actually composed.  "There is something called a curse that was being used during farm work!" "Wait, wait! What's this all the sudden? First, calm yourself!" I'm calm. Rather than that, please listen to me carefully, Priest Folke. What are you doing? Give me a pen. Quick. "This mark is called a curse. It looks complicated, but doesn’t it look like a letter?” "Oh, oh. But, it doesn't look like that." "We don't use these characters, and I thought it might be an ancient word. But if it is truly an ancient word, I can’t think of what it meant." Buhaa! I talked too much in one breath and thought I would die. However, it see

The characters of the early ancient civilization have something in common with the characters currently in use. This seems to be the opinion that many researchers agree with. This is not strange, as the late ancient civilization, which is linked to current civilization, inherited knowledge from the early ancient civilization.  However, as time goes by, from the first half to the second half, and from the second half to the present, there are lost characters. This is not a mystery. In the case of phonograms, the pronunciations that were previously distinguished may become indistinguishable and disappear as the spoken language changes. A good example is that the three letters "え", "ゑ", and "へ" cannot be distinguished from each other. On the contrary, new letters might appear.  The problem right now is that there are a lot of words that seem to have been lost with the early ancient civilization. Perhaps the shape of the vocal organs has changed significantly.

Even in this village, when we don’t even know the exact date, I know I’m now nine years old when winter has come. My study is doing better than I expected. Handwritten books are sometimes difficult because of the writer's bad habits and typographical errors, but once I get used to them, I don’t mind so much. Although I can't say that if I don't understand the context.  Three months have passed since I persuaded Priest Folke. Today, I'm starting to feel that the days are getting longer. I have finished reading through easy-to-read stories. I don't know advanced vocabulary yet, but I'm no longer stumbling upon common vocabulary. It's safe to say that I'm no longer studying for reading and am reading the book itself. It's such a good day, but I have some concerns. It's about time for spring, so it's likely that I won't have time to read. Of course, field work will get busy during spring but,――My father seems displeased that I'm going to

Fushi no Kami - Volume 1, Chapter 2

One month has passed since I borrowed the thin book. There were times when the strange characters looked difficult to remember. Sometimes, because it was a handwritten manuscript, it was more difficult to make out what letter it is. But the main reason why it took me so long is that I have no time. The autumn harvest was over a month ago, but that didn't mean the farmers were free. If you don't prepare winter wheat for the next harvest, you will die of hunger, and if you don’t prepare for winter, you will die of freezing. I think that the difficulty to survive in this world is too high. Though what's comforting is that even though it is winter, there is almost no snow, so the mortality rate is lower than the countries with snow. There is too little comfort in this world. "So, please lend me another book." "What, are you tired of the previous book?" Priest Folke expresses his amaze through a face that lacks sleep. I don't know why he looks like that.

A book. It was a book. It was always books that connected the will. Throughout history, many tyrants have tried to destroy books. There are even words called  vibrio coast , referring to burning books.  But none have succeeded. Books were burnt, turned into ash, fell apart, but did not disappear. Someone kept it in his bosom and saved it from the fire.  Someone buried it in the soil of their garden, thus avoiding tyrant's eyes.  Someone hid it in a place they will forget, only to take it out after the fire is extinguished.  Book has always been there with the brave and passionate rebel that fought the tyrant. Even today, books are still fighting. It continues to fight the greatest and strongest tyrants that began with the birth of history or with the birth of books. Time is the name of the ruthless and hard-working tyrant who constantly watches over books and constantly destroys them.  Yes, books are still fighting to not be destroyed by the atrocities of time. Please don't make such a scary face. I'm not saying things that might sound like a threat because I wanted to threaten you. I just want you to faithfully fulfill your role of an educator as priests from the church. Aren't you the one who tried to sabotage your own work?  I'm just stating my rights to study in a way that might sound threatening. Even an eight-year-old can tell which is the bad guy. "Well, I think you can believe that I don't plan to sell the books now." If that time actually comes, instead of borrowing it then sell it, I would rather steal then sell it. I smile as that thought passes my mind.  "However, it is difficult to keep it clean. I will be careful but sometimes accidents will happen." I said before Priest Folke could retort with anything.  "In the first place, won't a book be damaged and worn out in the course of time?" "Well, it's true that books will be worn out as time passes." As expected, Pr

Priest Folke looks at the bookshelf behind him and snorts. It causes the dust on the shelves to sway. "What are you going to do after reading a book? Especially in nowhere like this." Perhaps he wants to say that in a poor village, books are useless. With a self-deprecating smile, Priest Folke certainly looks like a deadman. A dead lonely man who protects the graveyard called bookshelf. It seems like I can't read books without persuading him. "Yes, I'll enjoy books as it is for the time being." The dead priest tilt over his tired face. "What are you talking about?" "You should've asked yourself the same question! It's a book! A book! Isn't it something you should enjoy? This world is too harsh! We can't even have the luxury to enjoy a day without doing anything! To me, who knows a wealthy life with memories that seemed like my previous life, the poverty of this world is not normal. It feels ten times harder than anyone else. Th
